All About Guttate Psoriasis
Guttate Psoriasis looks like small salmon pink drops on the skin. The name 'Guttate' comes from the Latin word meaning 'drop'. This particular type of psoriasis is not very common, as it affects less than 2% of the psoriasis sufferes. It's mainly seen on children and adults that are under 30 years old.
The trigger for an outbreak of guttate psoriasis is usually a streptococcal infection. These lesions will appear two to three weeks after a person has strep throat. This type of outbreak can be the first appearance of any type of psoriasis symptoms for some. It can also appear in those who have chronic outbreaks of plaque psoriasis.
Guttate psoriasis appears as clusters of small, salmon colored drops on the skin. The outbreak will usually start on the trunk and spread to the arms or legs. Occasionally, it will spread to the face, ears and scalp. The lesions will not usually affect the palms of the hands or the bottom of the feet. These lesions will usually cause itching.
This type of psoriasis is not life threatening, and it will usually go away on its own after a few weeks. On occasion, it can turn into a full blown plaque psoriasis outbreak. Treatment for this type of psoriasis is usually not necessary. You may want to try a cortisone cream to help control the itching.
At home care includes keeping the skin moisturized. Gels or creams containing aloe vera are very effective at controlling the itch associated with this type of psoriasis. Sun exposure is a great way to cause this type of psoriasis to go into remission. Expose the affected areas to the sun for about ten minutes each day. Be careful not to stay in the sun for too long because you don’t want to get sunburned. If you live in an area where there is little sun you can ask your dermatologist about alternative methods for getting the exposure you need.
The best way to prevent further outbreaks of guttate psoriasis is to maintain good health. Eat healthy and drink plenty of water. Take a good multivitamin daily and get plenty of exercise. If you find you are susceptible to strep infections, try to avoid those who are sick. Sleep is very important to a strong immune system. Make sure you are getting at least eight hours of uninterrupted sleep each night.
When it comes to guttate psoriasis, controlling the itch is the top priority. Your best defense against further outbreaks is a healthy immune system.
